When does the GTA 6 pre-load start?

Rockstar has confirmed that digital pre-load starts on November 10, 2026, nine days before launch. The start time depends on your console (official source):

  • PS5: at midnight local time, in each player's own time zone. In the US, that means 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10 in each time zone.
  • Xbox Series X|S: at the same moment worldwide, at 12:00 a.m. GMT on November 10. That's 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 9 in US Eastern Time, 4:00 p.m. on Monday the 9th in US Pacific Time, and 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday the 10th in Central Europe (our conversion of the official time).

How big is GTA 6? Up to 212 GB

According to Rockstar, the Grand Theft Auto VI pre-load requires up to 212 GB of available space, depending on your device. That's a big number, so it's worth checking your storage ahead of time rather than finding out on the 10th that it doesn't fit.

A few ideas to make room without losing anything important:

  • Uninstall games you no longer play. On both consoles you can download them again later from your library.
  • Review screenshots and videos saved on the console: video clips can take up quite a lot of space.
  • Check which games have add-ons or data you don't use. Some let you remove extra content without uninstalling the whole game.
  • Leave some headroom. Rockstar says "up to" 212 GB, but there may be updates after launch, so a little extra space never hurts.

How to set up the pre-load on PS5

Rockstar explains that, on PlayStation 5, the automatic pre-load works when two conditions are met (official source):

  1. Auto-downloads must be turned on on your console. PlayStation explains it step by step in its guide to pre-orders and automatic downloads on PS Store.
  2. The console must be powered on or in Rest Mode. In Rest Mode the PS5 can keep downloading; details are on PlayStation's power saving and Rest Mode page.

The pre-load Rockstar refers to is the digital one: it applies to the version of the game bought or pre-ordered digitally.

How to set up the pre-load on Xbox Series X|S

On Xbox, the conditions Rockstar lists are very similar (official source):

  1. Automatic updates must be turned on. Xbox explains this on its page about system and game updates.
  2. The console must be powered on or in Sleep mode. You can review the power options in Xbox's guide to power modes.

If you're unsure how digital pre-orders work on Xbox, Microsoft sums it up in its pre-order FAQ.

What happens after the pre-load?

Pre-loading doesn't move the launch forward: according to Rockstar, GTA 6 releases at midnight local time on November 19 in all regions, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The pre-load simply gets the game downloaded so you can start as soon as that time arrives. Before that night, it's a good idea to:

  • Check that the download has fully finished.
  • Install any pending console updates.
  • Go through our launch day checklist.
  • Keep the ViceTracker tracker handy so you can check off collectibles from minute one. Real data will be available from November 19.

If the pre-load isn't working

Rockstar points to each platform's support pages for download issues:

First, check the basics: enough free space, auto-downloads or automatic updates turned on, and the console on or in Rest/Sleep mode and connected to the internet.
